The city of Preveza is located at the entrance of the Ambracian Gulf , near the ruins of the ancient city of Vereniki, in a 10km distance from the ruins of ancient Nicopolis, which was built after the battle of Aktion in 31 B.C . Its special location played an important role in its following intellectual and trade development. The first clear reference of its name is found in a poem..
In 1821, during the Greek War of Independence, it was not easy for the people of the area to rebel as the town was isolated from the other areas which had already started the resistance movement. Nonetheless, the residents of Preveza took part in the military operations in Central Greece and Peloponnese. Despite the fact that Preveza was not originally part of the new Greek state , its development during the 19th century was remarkable, mainly in the economic field. Preveza was finally set free in 21st of October, 1912.
After 1983 Preveza acceded in the united urban design. Today, the town has social and technical infrastracture which includes administration , health care, education, sports facilities, port authority etc.
